    Data released by the ORR shows passengers made 1.83 billion journeys on the Britain’s rail network last year, yet many of the platforms supporting those journeys were built decades ago and continue to be maintained well beyond their intended design life.

    Across the network, ageing platforms consume maintenance budgets through an ongoing cycle of inspections, temporary works and patch repairs. While these interventions may keep stations operational, they rarely improve long-term asset condition and can increase cost, disruption and operational risk over time.

    At the same time, every station project faces growing pressure to minimise possessions, reduce passenger disruption, lower embodied carbon and deliver greater value from every investment. The railway doesn’t simply need another repair. It needs a better approach to platform renewal.

    The d² Dura Platform System replaces traditional heavy civil engineering with a lightweight, modular platform solution that is faster to install, lower in embodied carbon and designed for over 60 years of service.

    For decades, precast concrete has been the default approach to station platform construction. While proven, it typically relies upon:

    Proven Across the Rail Network

    Choosing a new platform system requires confidence.

    The d² Dura Platform System has been proven across a wide range of operational railway environments. At Needham Market Station, a major platform replacement was completed safely in under 36 hours during a single weekend possession. More than a decade later, the platform continues to provide reliable service, demonstrating that rapid modular construction need not come at the expense of long-term durability.

    At Seven Sisters Station in London, platforms installed in 2019 were successfully re-gauged following track renewals in 2023, restoring compliance in just 24 hours without major reconstruction. Rather than replacing the asset, the modular platform was simply adjusted to meet the railway’s changing requirements.

    These projects, together with more than 70 successful Dura Platform installations across the UK and internationally, demonstrate not only the speed of modular construction, but also the long-term resilience, adaptability and whole-life value of the d² Platform System.
