    Access Structures

    We provide the most comprehensive material data in the industry, to help engineers have confidence in designing safe structures with our d² composite products.

    We design, fabricate and supply cost-effective, practical and safe GRP access structures using our market-leading d² Dura Profile, Dura Grating and Dura Handrailing components. Heavy duty, non-conductive, non-corrosive and chemically resistant, they provide a lightweight and durable alternative to steel, other metals or wood.

    Our specialist fabrication team boasts an impressive project portfolio fabricated within our East Anglian workshop, where Dura Composites is certified to ISO-9001 – the International standard for Quality Management. and use the latest technology, such as computer numerical controlled (CNC) machines, to produce intricate and bespoke designs.

    We offer a number of stepover access systems that can be easily specified on our website using our simple configurator. Our standard duty Access Structures have been designed to the stair configuration, height, and obstacle width of your specific project. Simply select your project site parameters to view available designs with pricing. Both straight and U-Shaped 180° turn configurations are available.

    We also offer a bespoke access structure fabrication service. Our most commonly requested bespoke GRP fabrications include Driver Hop-Ups, Machine Access, Embankment Staircases, Vehicle Access Steps, Roof Walkways, Trackside Walkways, Mezzanines, Handrailing, Gantries, Stepovers and Ladders.

    • Embankment Steps

      Our GRP embankment steps are fabricated from our d² GRP grating and profile sections to provide safe pedestrian access up and down railway embankments and steep slopes. We can supply fully fabricated or in kit format for simple installation on site for Network Rail Infrastructure Access Points and our designs include intermediate stair landings, self-closing gates and handrailing.

      We offer a range of efficiently-designed GRP driver hop-ups which can be employed by guards, train drivers and cleaning crews for safe access to (or exit from) trains.     We design your GRP structure to your specific project requirements and can fully support modular installation methods if required. All fabricated structures can be supplied with detailed dimensions and weights, including overall footprint size to ensure it will fit within your overall planned design.

    GRP fabrications can be free-standing (depending on the overall size and required application). Our specialist fabrication team can advise on the individual requirements of specific scenarios to ensure safety and structural stability is not compromised.

    Load requirements are factored into the structural design based on customer requirements and if our standard duty fabrications are not suitable for your project, we can design bespoke solutions. The 45mm mini mesh d² Dura Grating of the landings and treads of our standard duty stepovers for example are designed to be compliant with BS 6399 to meet 2.5Kn loadings (at 0.5% / L200) deflection. This is around 30% stronger than the standard 38mm grating used by other manufacturers. Handrail loadings achieve a 17mm Deflection at 0.36kN and landings achieve a 1.5kN Point Load / 2.5kN UDL @L/200.

    All Dura Composites structures are fully assembled in our workshop and can then be partially disassembled and shipped in simple batched or modular format to assist with speed of install. If you plan to self-assemble on site, simply let us know prior to placing your order and we’ll factor self-assembly methods into our design process. We’ll also supply full fabrication drawings to make sure you can install with confidence. Thanks to the versatility of our GRP and its lightweight nature, it can be affixed to virtually any substrate including concrete, steel framing and tarmac.

    Yes, we have a dedicated specialist installation team. All installation teams are supervised by an SSSTS trained supervisor, and all operatives carry CSCS cards, so you can be confident that Dura Composites adheres to safe working practices on site. If installation conditions are particularly challenging, we can conduct a site survey and provide additional guidance which may influence or improve the planned design. We also have a team of CAD experts and an in-house GRP structural design resource to ensure your planned fabrication meets all the safety and loading requirements for your specific application.
