Rail Technical Coordinator
The Rail Technical Coordinator will be a key technical resource within the Rail team, responsible for producing high-quality rail design drawings and providing technical support throughout the sales, design and project delivery process. The designer will work closely with the Rail Sales, Client and Design teams, ensuring client requirements are clearly understood, technically evaluated and effectively translated into practical design solutions.
Working collaboratively across the wider business, the Rail technical Coordinator will provide technical input to rail projects, support client meetings and design reviews, and ensure designs comply with relevant Network Rail standards, rail industry requirements, and applicable British and European standards.
The role will also support the Rail team during IDC and IDR meetings, coordinating technical information, responding to design queries and ensuring actions are effectively managed and progressed through to completion.
Key Duties
Rail Design & Drawings
- Produce accurate and professional 2D and 3D drawings for platforms, walkways, access systems, structures and other bespoke GRP rail applications.
- Develop designs from client specifications, surveys, existing drawings, site information and engineering requirements.
- Produce general arrangement, fabrication and installation drawings as required.
- Ensure drawings are produced in accordance with company procedures and relevant rail industry requirements.
- Review client and third-party drawings and identify potential design issues, clashes, omissions or areas requiring clarification.
- Incorporate design changes and client comments efficiently and accurately.
- Maintain drawing revisions and ensure appropriate document control throughout the project lifecycle.
Design Verification & Checking
- Undertake independent technical checking of rail design drawings prepared by colleagues or external designers in accordance with Dura’s design management procedures.
- Verify compliance with project specifications, Network Rail standards, relevant British Standards and company design requirements.
- Record and resolve technical comments prior to formal approval and issue.
- Where authorised, act as the designated Drawing Checker within the design review process.
Rail Technical Support
- Provide technical input to the Rail team during the sales, quotation and project development stages.
- Review enquiries and assist Sales in understanding technical requirements, project constraints and potential design risks.
- Provide practical technical solutions that are commercially viable and suitable for manufacture and installation.
- Support the development of bespoke rail solutions where standard products or systems are not suitable.
- Provide technical guidance in line with Network Rail standards, rail-specific specifications, British Standards, Eurocodes and other applicable requirements.
- Identify when engineering input, calculations, FEA, design checks or specialist technical review may be required.
- Act as a technical point of contact between Rail Sales, Design, Engineering, Manufacturing and Operations.
Design Libraries & Product Details
- Help build and maintain a design library for Dura Composites products, engineering reports and standard connection details.
- Create and maintain a suite of standardised detail drawings
- Support the Rail Team in developing standardised technical design responses to common client requirements and enquiries.
Client & Project Support
- Attend client meetings, design workshops and technical discussions as required.
- Provide clear and professional technical input during client meetings.
- Help translate client requirements into practical design solutions.
- Respond to technical queries and assist with the preparation of technical submissions.
- Support the Rail team in managing client expectations around design requirements, program and technical constraints.
- Build strong technical relationships with clients, consultants, contractors and other project stakeholders.
- Support the Rail team with IDC and IDR meetings and associated design review activities.
- Prepare drawings, technical information and supporting documentation for design reviews.
- Record and respond to design comments and actions.
- Coordinate with internal departments to ensure design review actions are closed out effectively.
- Assist in identifying and managing technical risks arising from design reviews.
- Ensure relevant comments and changes are incorporated into subsequent drawing revisions.
The Rail Technical Coordinator will help establish a strong flow of information between these departments, reducing delays caused by unclear requirements, design changes or communication gaps.
Knowledge, Skills & Competencies
- Experience working within a rail, structural, civil or engineering design environment.
- Strong understanding of technical drawing principles and design processes.
- Experience producing detailed fabrication drawings.
- Competent with relevant CAD software, such as AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks or equivalent.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications and technical information.
- Strong understanding of design development and drawing revision processes.
- Ability to communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to design.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
- Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills.
- Support the Rail team in applying the principles of CDM Regulations 2015 throughout the design process.
- Attend site when required
- Previous experience working on Network Rail or other UK rail projects.
- Knowledge of Network Rail standards and processes.
- Experience participating in IDC / IDR / design review processes.
- Knowledge of GRP/composite structures and products.
- Understanding of structural design principles and load requirements.
- Experience working with contractors, consultants or infrastructure clients.
- Understanding of manufacturing and fabrication processes.
- Experience supporting technical sales or pre-construction activities.

Basic Salary
£36,000 – £40,000 per annum (depending on experience)
NPGSBS
Potential to earn 20% of Basic salary, following one year’s service as part of the companywide Net Profit Gain Share Bonus System (NPGSBS)

£43,200 – £48,000 per annum

33 days per year (inc. bank holidays)
