Cycleways made safe with d² Dura Grating mesh and solid top
As featured on BBC’s Countryfile, this cycleway, known locally as the Lias Line, was selected for improvement following a review of the National Cycle Network, which found that much of the existing off-road sections were overgrown, had poor surfaces and featured gradients that didn’t meet current standards.
Costing around £5.1m and funded by the Department for Transport, the project was coordinated by a leading cycling charity, who appointed building and civil engineering Currall Lewis & Martin Construction Ltd (CLM) to carry out the works. CLM have 150 years’ experience in the successful delivery of a variety of construction schemes, including cycleways and footbridges and proved to be the perfect delivery partner.
A new 61 metre raised boardwalk section was added in a segment of the route which features a former railway cutting which was deep, prone to heavy flooding and became impassable in poor weather. Our unique d2 solid top and mini mesh grating panels were chosen for the boardwalk surface due to their unrivalled strength to weight ratio, light transmittance, anti slip surface and class B fire rating.
The side section of the boardwalk utilised 53mm solid top grating which provides a solid surface suitable for all types of cycles, wheeled vehicles and footwear, whilst the main section is constructed from 55mm mini mesh grating. The small holes sizes provide a safe walking surface whilst allowing for drainage across the length of the boardwalk.
Proven to maintain 95% of its slip resistance after an incredible 1.1 million footfalls, the advanced gritted surface of both grating panel variants offers ultra-low slip potential in both wet and dry conditions, helping to ensure safety and accessibility for a wide range of pathway users.
