Lightweight, chemically resistant and strong for leisure environments.
Coral Reef Waterworld in Bracknell is a popular family attraction managed by Everyone Active in partnership with Bracknell Forest Council. In 2020, work began on a new splashpad aquatic play environment located near the main pool area, led by specialist contractor Ustigate Waterplay, who engaged Dura Composites to provide design and installation services for the splashpad framework.
Consisting of aquatic play equipment, pipework and water management systems, the splashpad was a complex construction which proved the perfect vehicle for Dura Composites Glass Reinforced Polymer (GRP) substructure components, including Dura Profile 152 x 152 x 9.5 Wide Flange Beams and 203 x 53 x 9.5 Dura Profile Channels supported on Buzon pedestals.
Whilst the design of the splashpad play equipment encourages interaction and cognitive thinking, the nature of the area results in continual splashing, resulting in more atmospheric moisture which helps deposit chlorides from the pool water onto the surrounding areas. When combined with high water temperatures and an increase in the use of chemical disinfectants, the aggressive atmosphere can have a marked degenerative impact on traditional materials such as low grade steel. By contrast, the isophthalic resin used in the GRP Dura Profiles is particularly suited to a swimming pool environment as the chemically resistant material performs well when exposed to chlorinated water and other contaminants.
Lightweight, chemically resistant and strong, the anticipated performance of the GRP Dura Profile structure was subject to a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) study by Dura Composites’ Structural Design Manager prior to installation, including an analysis of concentrated loads and deflection in specific areas.
The sub floor was constructed from 53mm d² Dura Grating Solid Top panels which provided a fully covered system which supported the water runoff. This was a critical part of the design, as the splashpad does not promote standing water and is installed on what appears to the leisure centre users to be a close to flat surface.
The panels were suited to manual handling and were easy to manoeuvre into place without the need for specialist lifting equipment. The Dura Composites installation operatives who carried out the works on behalf of Ustigate have a wealth of construction experience, are members of Achilles Building Confidence and are IPAF and PASMA qualified.
