Walkways and work platforms installed and used in industrial environments are likely to come under the scope of the standard BS4592: Part 0: 2006 +A1: 2012 which states that in terms of flooring, the maximum openings should not permit the passage of a 35mm diameter ball or sphere. This is often referred to as being 35mm ball-proof or meeting the requirements of the 35mm ball fall test.

If the platform is above an area where people are working rather than just passing occasionally then the permitted aperture size is reduced to 20mm (20mm ball-proof). This is to prevent falling objects such as screws or tools injuring anyone working below.

The ball fall test also becomes relevant in the context of BS EN ISO 14122-2:2016, which specifies minimum requirements that apply when permanent means of access to machinery means that working platforms and walkways are required. This standard also states that openings should prevent a 35mm sphere, or a 20mm sphere for floorings above a place where people work.
