    GRP d² Dura Platform Temporary Terminus for Eastside Metro Extension

    Project Overview

    As part of the transformative Eastside Metro Extension, Dura Composites was appointed by Midland Metro Alliance to deliver a key early-phase infrastructure element — a fully integrated temporary tram terminus on Moor Street Queensway, adjacent to the Clayton Hotel.

    This strategic stop enables passenger services to commence ahead of the full route’s completion, helping reduce congestion and improve connectivity in the area surrounding Moor Street Station, Millennium Point, and Birmingham City University. The terminus also acts as a critical link in preparation for the future HS2 Curzon Street Station, supporting seamless interchange across tram, rail, bus, coach and Sprint networks.

    A Smarter, Safer, Lower Carbon Platform Solution

    To meet demanding programme timescales and tight site constraints, the Midland Metro Alliance selected d² Dura Platform — the world’s lowest carbon composite station platform system — for its rapid install capability, low weight, and modular adaptability.

    One of the standout benefits of the system is its demountable design, which allows the platform to be removed and reinstalled at an alternative location once the full HS2 infrastructure becomes operational — maximising asset lifecycle value and reducing future material waste. The use of modular GRP panels also avoids the need for expensive and disruptive breaking out of concrete slab in the future.

    Other key benefits included:

    • Lightweight Design: Up to 65% lighter than concrete, enabling rapid installation with minimal disruption
    • Simple Integration: Supports handrailing, fencing, gates, ramps and shelter fixings
    • Proven Sustainability: Low embodied carbon by design, fully demountable, and recyclable at end of use, supported by EPDs and Carbon Reports.

    Scope of Works

    • Full design, supply and installation of modular GRP d² Dura Platform system
    • Integration of access ramp, edge protection and gates
    • Delivered during a phased urban transport programme with live interfaces
    • Installation ahead of overnight track testing to validate early operational use

    Enabling Early Passenger Services and Future Connectivity

    The installation of the temporary Moor Street tram terminus is a critical enabler for early services to begin in autumn 2025 — allowing local residents, students, and commuters to benefit from enhanced public transport well before the HS2 Curzon Street station opens.

    This strategic intervention ensures the city remains connected while construction continues towards Digbeth Coach Station and the wider East Birmingham to Solihull Metro extension.

    Importantly, because d² Dura Platform is both adjustable and demountable, it can be relocated and reused elsewhere on the network in future phases — supporting the alliance’s long-term sustainability and asset optimisation goals.

    This project is part of a long-term vision for a better-connected Birmingham and Black Country, backed by over £1.3 billion in investment and delivered by a 450-strong team across the Midland Metro Alliance.
