This rail footbridge structural staircase replacement at Turkey Steet Station was successfully completed in a 52-hour possession time using fast-fit Dura Slab Structural GRP Stair Treads.
This project involved the removal of two large metal staircases and the crane lifting of two new steel staircase structures into position. The previous timber staircases featured degraded timber treads with gritted plate covers that were no longer safe due to the degradation of the substructure and plate surface.
Pultruded GRP treads were selected for the stair and landing surfaces due to their durability, but Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads were deemed to be the best solution thanks to their in-built rise and goings, fall for water runoff and single unit construction which enabled rapid installation. Flush fixings that are safe for all footwear were achieved using Dura’s bespoke discrete Cam Fixing System.
All works needed to be completed over a single weekend possession with the staircase handed back for operational use on Monday morning, to the lightweight nature of the Dura Slab treads, plus their ease of manual handling was a huge contributor in making sure this project was completed within the tight timescales.

Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads
Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads have a unified construction that speeds up installation, leading to cost savings and minimising disruptions for end users. Made from pultruded Glass Reinforced Polymer (GRP), our stair treads are lightweight, exceptionally strong, anti-slip, non-corrosive, and non-conductive. Specifically designed for footbridges and staircases, they address issues commonly associated with traditional materials like wood. Unlike timber treads that require frequent refurbishment due to susceptibility to rot, compromising structural integrity and posing potential “slip or trip” hazards for pedestrians, our GRP treads offer a safe, user-friendly, and low-maintenance alternative.
