Project: Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm Murray Firth, North Sea

Client: R J McLeod & Siemens Wind Power and Renewables Division

The Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm is a wind farm close to the Beatrice oil field in the Moray Firth, 13 km off the north east coast of Scotland. Scotland’s single largest source of renewable energy, this £2.65bn project involves 84 Siemens Gamesa turbines and achieves 588MW of electricity.

Dura Composites specialises in the supply of high quality non-conductive Glass Reinforced Polymer (GRP) grating, handrail and slab products which are ideal for use in electrified environments across the energy and utilities industries.

Our clients, RJ McLeod and Siemens Wind Power and Renewables Division were looking for a material for the Beatrice project which was nonconductive, met specific load classes, was easy to install, corrosion-resistant, slip-resistant, and that could comply with the existing colour scheme currently employed for similar projects.

Dura Composites extensive GRP product range meant that we could provide live load tested solutions for a vast range of applications across the site. Our flooring products feature UV inhibitors which protect against sun degradation and the innovative anti-slip surface is tested to an incredible 1.1 million footfalls in accordance with BS 7976-2:2002+A1:2013.

Unlocking the Power of GRP for the Energy Industry

GRP composites can provide major design flexibility, time saving benefits and significant lifecycle advantages over traditional materials such as steel and concrete, and recent clarification of key standards areas such as fire performance have made them more accessible than ever. Tailored properties such as strength, stiffness, weight and colour can be engineered by product design at the early stages of development and applications for GRP within the energy industry include raised bund flooring, pedestrian walkways, trench and duct covers, access gratings, ladders, handrails and structures.

Solutions installed at the substation included GRP raised bund access flooring with pedestals, GRP Vehicular Open Mesh Trench Covers (C250 Rated), GRP Vehicular Solid Drawpit Covers (C250 Rated), GRP Up & Over Fabrication Stair Access, GRP Modular KeyClamp Handrailing and GRP Building Access Fabrication Stairs.

We are pleased to have gained a SMAS Worksafe certificate which means that we have met the SSIP core criteria recognised by the HSE and other SSIP accreditation schemes. All installation teams are supervised by an SSSTS trained supervisor, and all operatives carry CSCS cards, so you can be confident in choosing us. The company is also ISO 9001 certified – a quality management system that helps us continually monitor and manage quality in order to achieve, and benchmark, high performance and service.
