Our Rail Project is Shortlisted for Composites UK Awards
Composites UK is the leading trade body supporting the composites industry who aim to enhance and promote the safe and effective use of composites. As members and with global composite competition ever increasing it is critical that we receive support from such an innovative and forward-thinking organisation. We are exceptionally proud to be shortlisted for their 2019 composites industry award of Innovation in Design, which will be presented at the annual awards dinner on 30th October at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham, coinciding with the Advanced Engineering Show.
Our nomination focussed on our delivery of major safety improvements with our GRP fencing, End of Platform Gates and Anti-Trespass Guards on the UK rail network. We are constantly working with the Rail Industry to develop and design products which meet their industry-specific criteria. Some of the biggest challenges the rail industry faces is that of the trespass of passengers onto the live track. In partnership with Balfour Beatty, we identified some major limitations on the current platform barrier designs. We worked with their team to develop End of Platform Gates which were required to meet a specified strength-to-weight load-bearing performance and deliver a non-conductive modular barrier system which will not corrode or need to be replaced for years to come.
As with all Dura Composites Rail product designs, the new End of Platform Gate design took into account the entire asset lifecycle, from design, construction and installation through to renewal and disposal, thanks to the level of detailed information that Dura Composites was able to provide about its GRP product range – including strength, load, and deflection. The new design was fabricated and supplied to 41 stations within an incredible 3 week lead time.
Throughout the project, Dura Composites’ Rail Sector Sales Manager Richard Palmer and our experienced Account Manager Megan Hewett worked alongside Balfour Beatty’s Site Agent and other key stakeholders to ensure that all prefabricated components were delivered in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible whilst minimising disruption for both lineside communities and passengers.
As well as being easier to deploy and safer than alternatives, the Dura solution also helped to save valuable labour time and costs.

We won’t hesitate in coming to Dura Composites to deploy this new design for future station projects”.
