Richmond Cycle Hub, Richmond Station, West London, UK

Smart, sustainable flooring for active travel infrastructure

    Richmond Cycle Hub

    Project Overview

The Richmond Cycle Hub represents a landmark investment in sustainable transport, delivering one of the UK’s largest purpose-built cycle storage facilities at Richmond Station in South West London. Designed to encourage active travel and ease local congestion, the three-storey hub provides secure parking for more than 650 bicycles.

The project was realised through a progressive partnership between Richmond Council and South Western Railway, with INVVU Construction Consultants serving as Principal Designer. Emico Ltd led the on-site delivery, coordinating architectural, structural, civil, and M&E disciplines, while Dura Composites was selected to supply the modular flooring solution.

Despite pandemic-related delays, the scheme was successfully completed in Autumn 2025, highlighting the resilience of the delivery team and underscoring the long-term benefits of investing in modern, low-carbon infrastructure.

A Modular System for Performance and Efficiency.

Dura Composites supplied over 570 panels of its d² Dura Platform 40 walkways system, an approved product on Network Rail’s infrastructure list. Offering a span capability of up to 1.5 metres and a load performance of 5kN UDL at L/300 deflection, the panels weigh just 35.55kg per m², enabling installation without the need for heavy lifting equipment. This lightweight design was used to cover almost 600 sqm of walkway area across multiple levels and helped reduce both installation time and project costs.

The panels feature Dura’s advanced Tri-Tone Grit surface, independently tested to BS 7976-2:2002+A1:2013. Proven to retain 97.5% of its original slip resistance after 1.1 million footfalls, Tri-Tone ensures long-lasting safety in high-traffic areas subject to repeated pedestrian and wheeled bike access.

With a 60-year design life and full recyclability through Dura’s repurposing programme, the system contributes to both operational resilience and circular economy goals.

    Inclusive Design and Environmental Innovation.

The Richmond Cycle Hub is a showcase of inclusive and sustainable design. Key features include:

    • Solar panels powering lighting and operations
    • A rainwater reclamation system for reduced water use
    • Reused steel and a green roof supporting biodiversity
    • Alignment with BREEAM sustainability principles

Designed for circularity, our d² Dura Platform panels are demountable and reusable, enabling future reconfiguration, relocation, or targeted replacement without wasteful demolition. When panels eventually reach end of life, they can be mechanically repurposed into new materials for composites production, helping to close the loop and support circular procurement.

    Results & Impact

    The completed hub provides:

    • A scalable blueprint for borough-wide sustainable transport projects
    • Secure, modern storage for 658+ bicycles
    • A 60-year design life modular flooring system with full recyclability
    • Proven slip resistance for safe, repeated pedestrian and cycle access
