    Project Overview

    A major heavy industry facility in the UK required urgent infrastructure upgrades to maintain operational safety and resilience. The site supports essential sectors such as energy storage, offshore infrastructure, and advanced manufacturing through the handling and processing of strategic materials.

    Challenge

    A key steel staircase providing access between the site’s main facility and a riverside operational corridor had deteriorated due to severe corrosion. This access route is critical for daily logistics, emergency egress, and compliance with environmental and flood defence obligations. Situated in a harsh coastal environment with regular exposure to salt-laden air, weathering and heavy industrial use, the staircase required a durable, low-maintenance replacement.

    Solution

    Dura Composites was appointed to design and supply a replacement GRP (Glass Reinforced Polymer) staircase, engineered specifically for demanding industrial and marine-edge settings. GRP was chosen for its outstanding corrosion resistance, non-conductive properties, and slip-resistant surface — ensuring safety and long-term structural integrity.

    The staircase treads were manufactured using d² Dura Grating, a King’s Award-winning composite product offering low embodied carbon and high strength-to-weight performance. Its lightweight modular design enabled rapid installation with minimal disruption to the site’s continuous operations and ensured compliance with stringent COMAH safety requirements.

    Outcome

    The installation of the GRP staircase has significantly improved access safety and durability at this critical infrastructure site. By eliminating corrosion risks and reducing ongoing maintenance, the upgrade has enhanced operational continuity.
