Tulse Hill Rail Station, London, UK

    GRP Rail Station Platform

    Project Overview

In 2012, Hammond (ECS) Ltd and Dura Composites developed a cost-effective solution at Tulse Hill station in London, addressing platform issues without closing it. Their innovation saved money, reduced disruptions, and eliminated maintenance costs.

    Lightweight composite platform panels.

Way back in 2012, Hammond (ecs) Ltd and Dura Composites worked on the inaugural Dura Platform and Mountbridge solution at Tulse Hill station in Lambeth, South London – where there were severe stepping distance issues on platform 1 but no opportunities to close the platform. The use of the lightweight composite platform panels and Mountbridge installation meant significant benefits in terms of cost, flexibility and efficiency.

Approximately 25% of the cost of a traditional station rebuild approach was been saved, with half the number of possessions needed to complete the work. The yellow tactile integrated with the platform edge eliminated the ongoing cost of maintaining the platform line painting. The completed Tulse Hill project met with praise from across the rail industry, including the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR), First Capital Connect and Southern Railway, who were keen to see the design used at other stations where Platform Train Interface (PTI) is a safety risk.

Since this project in 2015, tens of thousands of metres of Dura Platform have been installed across the UK railway network. Check out our more recent case studies to see how our patented Dura Platform has evolved to become the market-leading product of today, with a variety of unique features that can’t be found anywhere else.

The work at Tulse Hill station is a great example of using creative thinking to solve a problem, with the additional benefit that project cost less and took less time to deliver than a traditional station rebuild would have. I have been especially pleased by the response from our customers and we can repeat the project at other stations where this will solve some of the logistical problems of carrying out restorative works.
