    GRP Footbridge Decking

    Project Overview

Penwortham Footbridge is a popular route with local runners and walkers. During Storm Ciara in February 2020, the old timber footbridge’s structure supports were dislodged, rendering the bridge unsafe for use. Due to the bridge’s constant use, the project was deemed as urgent by Lancashire County Council, who provided over £200k of funding to the project under the Transport Infrastructure Investment Fund: Storm Damage Schemes initiative.

Bridge deck panels spanning up to 2.4 metres.

Dura Composites worked with client Beaver Bridges to provide a new bridge deck using Glass Reinforced Polymer (GRP) Dura Slab type 50 panels, which met the required span and pedestrian loading criteria, whilst also providing a long-term low-maintenance solution.

Working with the project consultant, Dura also provided valuable design assistance regarding the substructure for the deck, fixing methods for the panels and a girder connection packer fixing solution. The Dura Slab precision-engineered heavy duty structural flooring slab is an ideal replacement for degraded timber, or lightweight non-conductive alternative to concrete or steel.

Panels can be manually handled to speed installation.

Its clever design dramatically reduces the cost of installation, maintenance and transport. Panels can be manually handled, making them easy to deploy on projects with difficult access restrictions such as bridges, without compromising on strength and safety. The 50mm thick panels can span up to 2.4m clear span, achieving 5kN/m2 at L/200 deflection. As with this project, they can be supplied with discreet fixing cams for a smooth aesthetic.

Dura Composites’ one piece heavy duty Dura Slab GRP bridge deck panels are pultruded in one mass to produce a consistent quality and an incredible strength to weight ratio. Although they’re strong, they’re easy for 2 people to lift and so are ideal for remote locations.
