    A2-Rated Aluminium Balcony Decking

    Project Overview

Monier Road is a characterful, mixed use residential development located in Hackney Wick’s Fish Island, an area shaped by its industrial heritage, waterways and rapidly evolving residential landscape.

Delivered by Taylor Wimpey, the scheme comprises three architecturally distinct buildings and includes apartments, duplexes, townhouses, creative studio spaces and generous communal gardens.

Balconies form a prominent visual and functional element of the scheme, requiring materials that meet stringent fire safety requirements while maintaining clean lines and a refined architectural finish.

Medway Fabrication Services Limited was responsible for the design, manufacture and installation of the balcony structures and selected Dura Composites’ aluminium decking as a critical component of the external envelope.

    Delivering the Balcony Solution

With multiple residential balconies integrated across the development, the decking system needed to satisfy a combination of regulatory, structural and aesthetic requirements. Key priorities for the project included:

    • A2 fire performance suitable for mid and high rise residential buildings
    • Long term slip resistance to support resident safety in all weather conditions
    • Structural strength compatible with bespoke balcony and drainage details
    • A fully finished appearance without the need for secondary soffit treatments
    • Durability and low maintenance to support whole life performance

Medway Fabrication Services selected Dura Deck® Aluminium Positive Drain 18mm for multiple balconies across the scheme, citing confidence in Dura Composites’ as their first choice for product quality, technical compliance and delivery reliability.

The system was installed to new residential balconies, working alongside a bespoke underside drainage arrangement that differed from standard balcony details. The Positive Drain profile enabled effective water management while delivering a seamless, integrated finish across the completed metalwork.

The decking system’s consistency, dimensional accuracy and ease of installation supported efficient progress on a complex, multi building scheme.

    A Modern Aluminium Decking System

Dura Deck® Aluminium Positive Drain 18mm is engineered specifically for balconies and elevated residential applications where fire performance, safety and durability are critical. At Monier Road, the system delivered:

    • A2,s1-d0 fire performance, supporting compliance with UK and EU fire safety guidance
    • Positive drainage, directing rainwater efficiently to gutters across balcony areas
    • Low slip risk, with anti slip performance tested in both wet and dry conditions
    • A double skin aluminium profile, combining a robust walking surface with a smooth, integrated soffit detail
    • A 60 year design life, minimising maintenance and long term operational impact

The anthracite colour finish complemented the surrounding metalwork and façade materials, contributing to a cohesive and high quality external appearance.

Supporting Sustainability and Build Quality Objectives

Manufactured from recycled aluminium and 100% recyclable at end of life, Dura Deck® Aluminium Positive Drain supports a circular economy approach to residential construction.

Advanced engineering reduces material usage by up to 25% compared with traditional profiles, lowering embodied carbon without compromising performance. With 68% recycled content and a verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), the system aligned with sustainability objectives while delivering long term value for both the developer and residents.

The combination of durability, fire safety and low maintenance supports whole life cost efficiency across the development.
