Commercial Accountant

Job Purpose: As Commercial Accountant, you will be an integral part of the team responsible for achieving assigned tasks and activities to ensure we strive in reaching our department vision, of delivering ‘Live Finances, Years of Spare Cash with JIT Supply’. Your role will be to do this through jointly coordinating and managing within the team, the daily and weekly bought/sales ledgers and treasury activities.
You’ll also be responsible for completing assigned month end tasks, and ensuring all accountable staff and stakeholders meet timescales set where they have financial tasks to complete, to enable the Finance Team to deliver agreed monthly management accounts and kpi’s to the senior leadership team on time.
Key Duties
Management Accounts
- Post payroll to finance system and report any discrepancies to payroll department.
- Review Sales Order Processing reports with Senior Credit Controller to ensure accurate direct profit reporting.
- Calculate and post Sales Rebate adjustments.
- Integrate with the Purchasing team for stock month end reconciliations.
- Revaluation of foreign exchange accounts on all Ledgers.
- Manage Asset Register including posting of additions, depreciation and reconciliations.
- Review and post Prepayments and Accruals.
- Review and Post any Group Company adjustments where applicable.
- Produce Management Information for Review with the Head of Finance prior to release to Senior Leadership Team.
- Assist Head of Finance in the production of Annual Budgets with regular forecasting updates.
- Monthly & Quarterly VAT Returns.
- Various ONS returns.
- Ensuring appropriate systems and internal controls are implemented/maintained.
Treasury
- Use online banking for current accounts to check payments and Direct Debits due ensuring that there is immediate access to funds the following day.
- Complete bank reconciliations and book foreign exchange impacts by comparing statements with the accounting system ensuring that all transactions have been posted to finance system.
- Maintain and improve cash flow forecasting by communicating directly with stakeholders to ensure enough funds are available and flag any future issues to the Head of Finance.
- Authorise expenses (within agreed limits) for all staff via applicable software.
- Responsible for setting up day to day Foreign and UK Supplier payments ensuring that these are processed in a timely manner.
- Responsible for the setting up of Trade Loans, ensuring that accurate and complete information is provided for the Foreign Supplier Payments.
- Manage the Petty Cash in line with internal procedures.
- Manage Company Credit Cards supporting Assistant Accountant where required to ensure submission deadlines are met.
- Manage Company Fuel Spend, collating business mileage against CC Statement showing fuel purchased to agree private fuel deductions and submit for payroll.
Purchase Ledger Activities
- Maintain multi-company Purchase Ledgers by receiving, coding, and processing invoices not covered by a PO, posting payments and allocations to clearly show what is owed and what has been paid to suppliers.
Purchasing Activities
- Provide financial insight and analysis to support UK and international purchasing decisions, including supplier cost comparisons and landed cost evaluations.
- Collaborate with the Purchasing team to assess supplier proposals and pricing strategies, particularly with suppliers based in China.
- Monitor and analyse variances in material costs, purchase price variances (PPV), and margin impacts linked to purchasing activity.
- Assist in supplier negotiations by providing financial modelling, cost-saving analysis, and scenario planning.
- Partner with logistics and purchasing functions to track and manage landed cost elements including shipping, customs, and FX exposure.
- Help Maintain and review supplier master data related to pricing, lead times, and delivery performance for reporting accuracy.
- Ensure alignment of procurement activity with budgeted cost targets and support forecast updates based on purchasing trends.
General Activity
- Arrange and participate in meetings, conferences, and project team activities.
- Undertake all training deemed necessary for the proper performance of the role.
- Maintaining and improving Business Processes and Systems.
- To provide absence cover for other team members when required.
- Provide general support to the Head of Finance as required.
- Participate in the year-end audit process as required.
- Train cover for time off to ensure scorecards are always up to date.
Knowledge, Skills & Competencies
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in all account’s areas and functions.
- Excellent communication skills and Professionalism.
- Minimum AAT/part AAT qualified or qualified by experience.
- Working knowledge of Sage 200 or Rootstock desirable.
- Ability to organise a demanding workload and to prioritise tasks on a daily basis.
- Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Excel (including formulas and pivot tables), PowerPoint and Word.
- Great judgement, organised, & excellent decision making.

Basic Salary
£35,000 – £45,000 per annum (depending on experience)
NPGSBS
Potential to earn 10% of Basic salary, following one year’s service as part of the companywide Net Profit Gain Share Bonus System (NPGSBS)
Holidays
20 days per year plus 8 bank holidays
(Option to purchase 5 additional days per year)
