GRP Footbridges And Landings
Dura Slab Stair Treads And Landings
Safe and Durable Dura Slab Systems Ideal for the Rail Industry
If you’re looking for prefabricated pedestrian bridges that can be installed virtually overnight without requiring denial of rail paths or extended track possessions then you’ve come to the right place.
Dura Composites has developed easily deployable FRP/GRP solutions featuring our market leading Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads and Landings and Dura Profile structural components.
If you require Non-Structural Stair Treads, scroll down to our gritted Non-Structural Stair Tread covers section at the base of this page.
Pre-Fabricated Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads Providing Strong Solutions to the Rail Industry
Created in association with Abellio Greater Anglia, this award-winning structural tread product incorporates a number of ground-breaking features designed to reduce project costs and installation times, thereby limiting disruption to passengers.
Pre-fabricated and lightweight, the treads and landing can easily be fixed into position, thanks to their single unit construction. Dura Slab structural stair treads feature a built-in riser for rapid installation and an in-built fall to assist with drainage and reduce pooling on stair surfaces. The Riser detail can be removed if necessary.
Dura Composites landing panels can span up to 2m clear span (50mm thick option), achieving 5kN/m2 at L/300 deflection. They reduce or eliminate the need for additional supports to break spans down, providing huge advantages over other composite solutions on the market. The need for less or no alterations to the sub structure also dramatically reduces the install time, number of possessions and overall disruption to the end user. No heavy lifting equipment is needed as all panels can be easily manhandled even in full stock lengths.
Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads are a precision engineered product made from GRP which complies with Network Rail specifications and offers significant improvements over traditional alternatives – including a dramatic reduction in installation time.
On-going maintenance of the Dura Slab Structural Stair Tread system is not required as Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) will not rot, corrode or even lose colour throughout is design life, and it is ideally suited to situations where the footbridge or staircase is located in close proximity to overhead power lines or electrified areas, due to its non-conductive properties.
GRP Structural Stair Treads
Rapid Installation Saves Time & Money
The Dura Composites treads and landings can be easily fixed into position thanks to their single unit construction and feature a built-in riser for rapid installation and an in-built fall to assist with drainage and reduce pooling on stair surfaces.
Available in 65mm thickness as standard, our GRP/FRP Stair Treads achieve the required 5kN/m2 at L/300 deflection, meaning that additional supports can be avoided in most scenarios. The 65mm size is designed to map to the most customary timber stair component size in common usage and therefore allows for a 10mm adjustment, meaning easy replacement of degraded timber.
On-going maintenance of the Dura Slab system is not required as GRP will not rot, corrode or even lose colour throughout is design life, and is ideally suited to situations where the footbridge or staircase is located in close proximity to overhead power lines or electrified areas, due to its non-conductive properties.
Structural Stair Treads For Rail Projects
Replacement Stairs & Landings are Quick and Easy to Install With Dura Composites
The products are formed by combining resin and glass fibres to produce ‘Thermoset’ products which are renowned for their strength and durability.
Where previous composite treads on the market have been limited in span capabilities, Dura Composites product span means that additional supports can be avoided in most scenarios. The design has built-in risers, speeding up the install process and a slight fall to assist in the prevention of water pooling which can lead to problems with ice in winter.
The Dura Composites systems made from fibreglass are lightweight, high-strength, anti-slip, non-corrosive and non-conductive and so overcome all the problems normally associated with the use of traditional materials such as wood, steel and concrete. Our structural stair treads can be installed with minimum disruption to passengers, whilst still offering benefits over traditional timber treads. All stair treads and landings have an anti slip surface which boasts one of the highest degrees of slip resistance ever measured for a walking surface.
Structural Treads & Landings Made From Fibreglass Vastly Reduce Installation Times
Commenting on the successful installation of Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads at Wymondham Rail Station, Simone Bailey Asset Management Director at Abellio Greater Anglia said:
“We are delighted with the results at Wymondham. Working in partnership with Dura Composites to develop a pioneering foot tread of this type demonstrates our continued commitment to improving stations. The upgraded footbridge has benefitted from an excellent refurbishment, with new treads that are better, more durable, safer and easy to install, whilst complimenting the footbridge structure – which has been repainted in original colours. It was important that this footbridge project enhanced its “usability” for customers and its appearance for the community, at a well-loved and well-preserved gateway to the town. We look forward to building on this success with future Dura Composites installations.”
Safe, Anti-Slip Stair Treads
Dura Composites Structural Treads are Health & Safety and DDA Compliant
GRP Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads Meet Health and Safety Requirements for the Rail Industry
To ensure safety and ease of access for people with limited vision, Dura Slab structural stair treads have DDA and Equality Act Compliant contrasting coloured nosings, and provide a slip-resistant surface, particularly when wet.
Structural Stair Treads are a Low Maintenance Alternative to Traditional Materials
Fibreglass will not rot, corrode or even lose colour throughout its design life, and is ideally suited to situations where the footbridge or staircase is located in close proximity to overhead power lines or electrified areas, due to its non-conductive properties. All stair treads and landings have a gritted, anti-slip surface, creating one of the highest degrees of slip resistance ever measured for a walking surface.
GRP Construction Materials Ideally Suited to the Rail Industry
The structural stair treads can span up to 2.1 metres, are corrosion and weather resistant, non-conductive and require minimal maintenance. Available in 65mm thickness as standard, the Dura Slab structural components are the ideal choice for complete refurbishment or individual tread and landing replacement projects.
All stair treads and landings have an anti slip surface creating one of the highest degrees of slip resistance ever measured for a walking surface.
The Dura Slab Structural Stair Tread solution is designed to meet and exceed the requirement specification for Network Rail. The range includes:

Non-Structural Stair Tread Covers
Anti-Slip Sheets to Cover Existing Steps
If you’re looking for a non-structural solution to the problem of worn or slippery treads on rail crossings and bridges then you may want to consider Dura Tread GRP anti-slip covers.
Dura Tread pre-formed pultruded anti-slip stair tread covers are a fast and convenient way to provide solid, slip-resistant footing for existing stairs. They can be installed over existing wood, concrete or metal steps by glueing, screwing or bolting into position for immediate use. Standard nosing for these covers is a highly visible yellow, with a white option also available. We also offer large ant-slip Dura Tread Sheets for landings and larger areas that require a non-structural cover option.
The proven gritted, maximum anti-slip Fibreglass Stair Tread Covers surface has one of the highest degrees of slip resistance ever measured for a walking surface, especially in wet and oily work areas.
Dura Stair Tread Cover
Weight per linear metre: 3.99kg
Clear span: N/A Cover only
Our high-quality pultruded GRP Step Covers are manufactured from a corrosion resistant isophthalic Polyester resin, with an extremely hardwearing gritted non-slip top surface, and are designed for both interior & exterior railway crossing and footbridges that require a non-structural application.
The high visibility nosing highlights the leading edge of the step, and the low profile characteristics of the Dura Tread Cover allows it to be fitted to new or existing metal, concrete, or timber steps whilst only increasing the overall step height by 5mm.
