Meet Our Expert Fabricators
Using the latest innovations in design technology and fabrication techniques, our fabrication service ensures you get the highest quality end product at the right price. As part of our Spotlight on Fabrication, we talked to one of the stars of our Fabrication Team and got the lowdown on what it's like working in such a fast-paced and challenging team.
Andrew Farquhar is a Senior Fabricator at Dura Composites. His wealth of experience and knowledge is highly valued, we asked him what he enjoys most about being part of the Fabrication Team.
How long have you worked at Dura Composites?
I've been part of the fabrication team here at Dura for around 4 years
What do you enjoy most about working at Dura Composites?
We have a reputation for great quality work and take great pride in being able to assist our customers in finding the most efficient, economical and safe processes possible. The Fabrication Team here at Dura are a great crew to work with. There's a real feeling of pulling together to get the projects completed and out to site. We all enjoy being part of the fabrication process and seeing the end result.
What's the most challenging project you have worked on?
I'd have to say it was the giant hexagonal project for Firstlight Fusion. Knowing that the structure I helped build is being used to test how to make fusion energy work in practice is pretty exciting. I was really proud to be part of the fabrication team and to have the chance to be part of the install team on site in Oxford. We wish them every success.
Did you get to have an input into the design?
The fabrication design process starts with the idea. Typically, customers come to us with a concept and it’s the job of our CAD and structural engineering team to work out the most cost-efficient design for the customer's requirements. It's then our job to turn that into a reality. it's a constant feedback loop though and we always highlight areas on a project where we can improve the design or make suggestions for improvements. That's what's great about the culture at Dura Composites, you're encouraged to use your voice, experience and expertise to make a positive difference.
What do you enjoy most about a fabrication project?
I really like seeing the end product come to life from the plans and GRP is such a great material to work with. The design possibilities are almost endless and the quality of the finished structures are superb. It's even better when I can get to site and be part of the install team. That's when you feel really proud to see and hear the customer's response to all the work and the skill that goes into delivering each project.
