New groynes or replacement groynes can be constructed using DURA SLAB Pultruded fibreglass 100 mm thick panels securely bolted to the existing heavy duty timber posts using stainless to nuts and bolts, together with stainless steel spreader plates. All in all a relatively simple process. This will provide a test bed for the fibreglass panels to be used without having to remove the original timber posts.

Traditionally, timber groynes are built from hardwood to endure the harsh shoreline environment. Most hardwood comes from tropical sources, making it both costly and potentially environmentally unacceptable. Timber groynes tend to reflect rather than absorb wave energy, making them significantly less effected. They are also more likely to structurally failure due to formation of scour channels around their seaward ends.

Beach Groynes are a barrier extending from the beach, offshore into the sea. Groynes are used to slow down the loss of beach grade sediment through longshore drift. With proper groyne field design, beach erosion can be reduced due to trapped sediment on the up drift-side of the groyne. Although acting to reduce the erosion on site, groynes typically cause sediment starvation down drift, shifting the erosion further down the coastline.

Groynes are cross shore structures designed to reduce longshore transport on open beaches or to deflect nearshore currents within an estuary. On an open beach they are normally built as a series to influence a long section of shoreline that has been nourished or is managed by recycling. In an estuary they may be single structures.

Dura Composites have been developing a very heavy duty Pultruded fibreglass post design in the region of 320 mm x 275 mm which incorporates a rolled steel I-beam 254mm x 146m within the Fibreglass structure, creating immense strength.

The post has an “oval” profile and is fitted with a domed top cap.

The appearance is aesthetically pleasing to the eye and safer for beach users as the posts have no sharp corners and the lateral boards are virtually integral with the oval shaped posts.

This new groyne post system is currently in development for use in Road Block Barriers and also Flood Defence Barrier systems and will be available at some time in the future following design, testing etc.

It is thanks to beach groyne systems, there is a reduction in the difference from the sea wall and the beach where applicable in certain shoreline areas around the UK coastline.

Groynes reduce longshore transport by trapping beach material and causing the beach orientations to change relative to the dominant wave directions. They mainly influence bedload transport and are most effective on shingle or gravel beaches. Sand is carried in temporary suspension during higher energy wave or current conditions and will therefore tend to be carried over or around any cross shore structures. Groynes can also be used successfully in estuaries to alter near shore tidal flow patterns.

Pultruded Fibreglass Beach Groynes profiles are manufactured by combining various resins with pure glassfibre reinforcement. They are formed and cured in a continuous process creating a product of extraordinary strength and resilience. The resultant profile offers a combination of benefits and mechanical properties exceeding those of metal. Weighing up to 80% less than steel and concrete, the matrial offers equivalent performance for considerably less weight. This results in major weight savings and lower installation and servicing removal costs due to more economical transportation, handling and on site positioning. The high strength to weight ratio has particular relevance for many applications in the structural beach groyne industry.
