Dura Composites Steps Up to the Challenge for Stanley’s Heroes & Helps Raise Awareness of Muscular Dystrophy
Leading Clacton-on Sea manufacturing business Dura Composites is holding series of summer events to raise money for a vital new car seat for local boy Stanley Newman who is affected by a rare form of Congenital Muscular Dystrophy (CMD) a progressive muscle wasting disease.
Dura Composites is an award-winning supplier of composite flooring, cladding & structures which can be used to replace concrete, wood and steel in a variety of commercial and domestic applications. Headquartered in Clacton-on-Sea, the company first heard about Stanley’s condition through their daily postman, Stanley’s grandfather Derek.
Stanley was born in May 2012 after a normal pregnancy, weighing a healthy 7lb 10oz. After turning one, Stanley’s strength started to regress & he became weaker, unable to stand, crawl or walk. After a difficult year of medical tests, eventually doctors diagnosed Stanley’s condition as a very rare form of Congenital Muscular Dystrophy or CMD, called LMNA-CMD. As with all types of Muscular Dystrophy, Stanley’s condition is a life limiting, progressive muscle wasting disease caused by a flaw in his genetic code, and there is currently no cure.
To combat the condition Stanley requires daily physiotherapy, has a Bluetooth device inserted in his chest to monitor his heart, and gets most of his nutrition through a feeding tube. With regular medical appointments to attend at both Addenbrooke’s and Great Ormond Street hospitals, Stanley is in desperate need of an adjustable car seat, to help provide adequate support and minimise fatigue and discomfort on the long journeys.
Costing over £3000 pounds, the car seat is out of reach for Rob and Laura, Stanley’s parents, who are dedicated to helping raise awareness of Stanley’s condition and to helping raise funds towards critical medical research into Muscular Dystrophy.
To help support the family, Dura Composites is holding a series of summer BBQ events at their Telford Road HQ to help raise money towards a car seat for Stanley, and to help promote the valuable work of the charity Muscular Dystrophy UK.
Although Stanley’s particular strain of the disease is rare, around 70,000 people in the UK have a muscle-wasting condition, and the severity varies greatly between types of the condition and between individuals.
As well as the summer BBQ events, Dura Composites are also planning to hold a community raffle and are asking asking local businesses to join them in getting involved by donating raffle prizes.
Speaking about the Dura Composites fundraising, Stanley’s dad Rob Newman, a local firefighter in Clacton said; “”We are touched that Dura Composites chose to reach out & offer Stanley their help, they are a big business with a big heart””.
Stuart Burns, Director at Dura Composites added: “As a family run business which has been based in Clacton for over 20 years, it’s always been important to us to have a positive impact on the local community. We employ over 55 dedicated staff who are passionate about making a real difference to our customers and we are keen to harness this momentum to help make positive changes for Stanley and those affected by Muscular Dystrophy across the UK.”
