Dura Composites and International Timber Donate Composite Timber Dura Deck to deserving family on BBC’s Flagship DIY SOS Programme
29th March 2017 – Dura Composites and its exclusive UK Distributor International Timber have helped transform the home of a Monmouth woman who suffered a life-changing stroke after giving birth to twins, by donating low maintenance composite timber Dura Deck as part of a dramatic BBC DIY SOS home renovation project.
DIY SOS is the BBC’s flagship home improvement programme, and features presenter Nick Knowles and his team of Purple Shirts taking on ambitious builds for deserving families in just a few days.
Charlotte Fairlie, 35, and husband Rob, 40, had been married for two years when Mrs Fairlie suffered a serious stroke minutes after giving birth. Doctors said she had a one per cent chance of survival. Despite being left with right-sided paralysis, brain damage and loss of her short term memory, Mrs Fairlie has slowly taught herself to walk again and can say a few basic words, but her home and garden in Monmouth, Wales badly needed updating to accommodate a live in carer and space for her twins.
The composite timber deck supplied by International Timber and Dura Composites was installed in the garden of the DIY SOS Monmouth build for the Fairlie family. Type 146 Charcoal Dura Deck was a great choice for the family thanks to its low maintenance requirements. The fact that the deck will never need painting, staining, sanding or treating means that the Fairlies and their twins can enjoy an outside deck with excellent anti-slip properties that’s accessible all year round – without the burden of ongoing maintenance.
All tradespeople and suppliers were invited to attend to the Big Reveal, where the family returned to see the house for the first time. Neil Summerell, Project Manager at International Timber was present and commented; “I was delighted to attend the Big Reveal and witness the emotional moment, amongst the rest of team and ‘Purple Shirts’. It was humbling to see how our donation impacted the lives of this family and the stunning transformation of their home. From everyone at Dura Composites and International Timber, we’d like to wish the Fairlie family all the best for the future.”
