Composite Garden Decking Adds £14.7k to Average Property Values of East of England Homes

April 24th, 2017 | Composite Timber Cladding, Dura Deck Composite Decking, News, Press Releases | 0 Comments

pretty Dura garden 2Leading supplier of composite timber decking and cladding, Dura Composites, and respected East Anglian estate agents, Boydens, have revealed that homeowners typically add a fantastic 5% to the value of their home through the simple installation of composite decking in their gardens. With the average property price in the East of England quoted by Barclays as £294,000, this adds a substantial £14,700 in value.

Homeowners in Colchester could see an uplift of £17.5K, while Chelmsford residents installing quality composite decking can expect to add a healthy £18.1K to their property value. Those in Suffolk can also maximise their property value with houses in Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds bolstered £16.5K and £15.9K respectively by adding composite decking to make their gardens accessible and usable all year round.

With Dura Composites estimating the average decking material cost for a 3-bed terrace for customers in the East of England at approximately £2,126, investing in composite decking such as their market-leading Dura Deck is a sure-fire way to give your property a boost. Given the 5% rise in property value estimated by Boydens, it’s clear that embarking on a simple composite decking installation can provide an almost sevenfold return on investment.

The number of people who stand to benefit is rising, as Dura Composites have also revealed a recorded growth in sales of 367% of its Dura Deck composite decking and composite Dura Cladding over the past 5 years, as customers discover the benefits of this low maintenance, eco-friendly and attractive material.

Managing Director of Dura Composites, Stuart Burns, explains how installing decking can be an effective way of raising the value of a property for those looking to remortgage or for those participating in the Government’s Help To Buy scheme.

“Whilst a property’s value can increase over time naturally, if you’re planning improvements to your home it’s important that you focus on those aspects which can make a real difference should you decide to move on in the future. In this day and age, owning a home is not, in itself, going to earn you enough money to move up to the next price bracket, so you have to take active steps to create that extra value for yourself. Many of those using the Help To Buy scheme look to add additional value to their home where possible in order to release the equity to repay the loan. Installing composite decking is a great way to achieve this. Its natural wood appearance, long lifespan and low maintenance make it an attractive prospect to potential buyers.

“Added to this, is the transferable warranty. At Dura Composites, the warranty that comes with Dura Deck in a residential or commercial application can be transferred during its 10 year period, from the purchaser to the subsequent buyer of the property, thus strengthening its appeal both for the initial purchaser and for subsequent owners.”

Boydens Marketing Manager, Paul Howe, explains further the influence home improvements can have both on a property’s asking price and the mindset of the potential buyer.

“There are several ways people can add value to their homes; from larger projects, such as building an extension or conservatory, to simpler tasks that create a dramatic impact on how you maximise your ability to use all of the space available such as installing decking. Having a well-maintained and presented home and garden maximises the desirability and therefore the ultimate value of your property.

What is composite decking and why should you choose it?Dura Strawbs 2

Whilst timber has traditionally been used for decking, the emergence of composite timber over the past 5 years has delivered a host of advantages over traditional materials and has led it to become the number one choice for homeowners looking for an attractive but future-proof solution. Strong and durable, Dura Deck composite decking looks and feels just like natural wood, but provides a longer-lasting solution that is environmentally friendly, easy to install and requires minimal maintenance.

Unlike traditional timber, Dura Deck requires only basic cleaning; the product still looks new after years of use and remains cost-effective throughout its lifecycle, requiring only an occasional wash and scrub to keep it looking at its best. Dura Deck comes in 4 great colours and different widths, will never rot, warp or splinter and doesn’t require any staining, treating or painting over its long lifetime.

Dura Composites products are also available through Jewson stores and a wide network of builder’s merchants across the UK.

Dura Composites and International Timber Donate Composite Timber Dura Deck to deserving family on BBC’s Flagship DIY SOS Programme

March 28th, 2017 | News, Press Releases | 0 Comments

29th March 2017 – Dura Composites and its exclusive UK Distributor International Timber have helped transform the home of a Monmouth woman who suffered a life-changing stroke after giving birth to twins, by donating low maintenance composite timber Dura Deck as part of a dramatic BBC DIY SOS home renovation project.

DIY SOS is the BBC’s flagship home improvement programme, and features presenter Nick Knowles and his team of Purple Shirts taking on ambitious builds for deserving families in just a few days.

Charlotte Fairlie, 35, and husband Rob, 40, had been married for two years when Mrs Fairlie suffered a serious stroke minutes after giving birth. Doctors said she had a one per cent chance of survival. Despite being left with right-sided paralysis, brain damage and loss of her short term memory, Mrs Fairlie has slowly taught herself to walk again and can say a few basic words, but her home and garden in Monmouth, Wales badly needed updating to accommodate a live in carer and space for her twins.

225_Charcoal_12The composite timber deck supplied by International Timber and Dura Composites was installed in the garden of the DIY SOS Monmouth build for the Fairlie family. Type 146 Charcoal Dura Deck was a great choice for the family thanks to its low maintenance requirements. The fact that the deck will never need painting, staining, sanding or treating means that the Fairlies and their twins can enjoy an outside deck with excellent anti-slip properties that’s accessible all year round – without the burden of ongoing maintenance.

All tradespeople and suppliers were invited to attend to the Big Reveal, where the family returned to see the house for the first time. Neil Summerell, Project Manager at International Timber was present and commented; “I was delighted to attend the Big Reveal and witness the emotional moment, amongst the rest of team and ‘Purple Shirts’. It was humbling to see how our donation impacted the lives of this family and the stunning transformation of their home. From everyone at Dura Composites and International Timber, we’d like to wish the Fairlie family all the best for the future.”

The Dura Deck composite timber decking range is available in 4 different designs and colours. As well as being ‘barefoot friendly’ and suitable for domestic use, Dura Deck is also ideal for commercial businesses such as Hotels, Pubs, Holiday Parks and Theme Park walkways, where long term durability and safety are important factors.

DIY SOS BBDura Deck is strong, durable and looks and feels just like natural wood. Its unique formula provides a longer lasting decking that is easy to install and requires minimal maintenance. The range is 100% Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC©) certified and is manufactured from up to 87% recycled materials making it the eco-friendly choice.

The Type 146 board used in the DIY SOS programme is available in Charcoal or Teak colours and has a grooved profile on one side and a smooth timber grain effect finish on the reverse, allowing the installer and end client to choose the best finish for their needs.

Dura Deck is available to purchase now through our specialist distributor, International Timber, who has 4 major UK depots in Stirlingshire, Manchester, Gloucestershire and Essex, and stocks a huge range of Dura Deck products including our proprietary composite bearers, sub-surface fixings and end caps. Dura Slab FRP Structural Stair Treads Win Top Award for Design Innovation in Recognition of their Durability and Ease of Installation

December 6th, 2016 | News, Press Releases | 0 Comments

Dura Composites has been recognised with a top award for Innovation in Composite Design at the prestigious Composites UK awards in Birmingham.

Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads 65mm

With over 20 years’ experience in delivering innovative high quality solutions that solve many of the challenges facing today’s industries, Dura Composites recently launched its new Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads which are ideal for both new build footbridges and for essential refurbishment works.

The new award-winning Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads are lightweight, meaning that the treads and landings can be easily fixed into position thanks to their single unit construction.  They feature a built-in riser for rapid installation and an in-built fall to assist with drainage and reduce pooling on stair surfaces. To ensure safety and ease of access for people with limited vision, Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads have DDA and Equality Act compliant contrasting coloured nosings, and provide a slip resistant surface, particularly when wet.

Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads 90mm

Available in 65mm or 90mm thicknesses, Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads can span up to 2.1m clear open span, achieving the required 5kN/m2 at L/300 deflection, meaning that additional supports can be avoided in most scenarios. The 65mm and 90mm sizes are designed to map to the two most customary timber stair component sizes in common usage, which are 75mm and 100mm,. The Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads in 65mm or 90mm therefore allow for a 10mm adjustment in each case, allowing for easy replacement of degraded timber.

On-going maintenance of the system is not required as Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) will not rot, corrode or even lose colour throughout is design life, and is ideally suited to situations where the footbridge or staircase is located in close proximity to overhead power lines or electrified areas, due to its non-conductive properties.

Commenting on the award win, Stuart Burns, Managing Director at Dura Composites said: “Our new Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads are more durable, safer and easier to install than anything previously on the market, and help save money through lower labour costs, fewer possessions and easier handling. We’re delighted with this award win which recognises our commitment to bringing innovative products to market that are designed for the future.”

Dura Composites Adds Value to Architects and Specifiers with the launch of BIM objects for its Dura Slab and Dura Grating Ranges

October 12th, 2016 | News, Press Releases | 0 Comments

bim-image1Dura Composites is pleased to announce the availability of BIM objects for its market-leading Dura Slab and Dura Grating product range.

Available free from the National Building Specification (NBS) National BIM Library, the new data-rich Dura Slab and Dura Grating BIM Objects allow specifiers to see up-to-date, accurate data about Dura Composites products and to easily incorporate them into their overall design. Authored to the trusted NBS standard, each BIM Object details the various surface finishes, profiles, sizes and colour options for each product, and provides specifiers and end clients with detailed information on how the products will perform during their expected lifecycle.

With the UK Government stating that the use of BIM will be mandatory on all public sector projects from 2016, Dura Composites has once again strengthened its market-leading service and support by investing in the development of BIM objects to help its customers to streamline the construction process and predict and reduce errors throughout the different stages of design.

bim-image2Those downloading Dura Composites BIM objects in Autodesk Revit format can be confident that each file has been quality checked by the NBS team, catalogued in line with the NBS and includes embedded product information and associated data to support the specification.

Commenting on the launch, Stuart Burns, Managing Director at Dura Composites said: “With the increasingly-important role that BIM is playing in the construction industry, it’s vital for manufacturers like us to support specifiers by providing comprehensive real world information about the products we supply in a consistent and highly useable format. Our BIM objects are the perfect complement to our other extensive technical resources, which include in-house CAD design and Structural Engineering support, Technical Manuals, Real World Test Data, and Anti-Slip Certification”.

For those not familiar with the products, both Dura Slab and Dura Grating are made from high strength and low weight Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP), and offer a durable and low maintenance alternative to wood, concrete and steel.

Dura Slab weighs up to 80% less than steel and concrete and is ideally suited for use as trench covers, offering low installation and servicing removal costs thanks to its more economical transportation, handling and on site positioning.

Dura Grating is a high strength flooring material designed for use on raised or roof walkways, as service riser flooring and for protective screening. It has a long and virtually maintenance free life and benefits from a low lifecycle cost. The gritted anti-slip texture has one of the highest degrees of slip resistance ever measured for a walking surface, making it well-suited to wet or oily environments.

Dura Grating Floor Risers are lightweight, durable, corrosion resistant, easy to install and can be cut on site with no hot works permits required.

In London, we’re proud that the products have been used in a diverse range of challenging projects including the Athlete’s Village at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the highly acclaimed One The Elephant development, and we look forward to the awards ceremony in October.

Dura Composites Steps Up to the Challenge for Stanley’s Heroes & Helps Raise Awareness of Muscular Dystrophy

July 6th, 2016 | News, Press Releases | 0 Comments

Leading Clacton-on Sea manufacturing business Dura Composites is holding series of summer events to raise money for a vital new car seat for local boy Stanley Newman who is affected by a rare form of Congenital Muscular Dystrophy (CMD) a progressive muscle wasting disease.

Dura Composites is an award-winning supplier of composite flooring, cladding & structures which can be used to replace concrete, wood and steel in a variety of commercial and domestic applications. Headquartered in Clacton-on-Sea, the company first heard about Stanley’s condition through their daily postman, Stanley’s grandfather Derek.

Stanley was born in May 2012 after a normal pregnancy, weighing a healthy 7lb 10oz.  After turning one, Stanley’s strength started to regress & he became weaker, unable to stand, crawl or walk. After a difficult year of medical tests, eventually doctors diagnosed Stanley’s condition as a very rare form of Congenital Muscular Dystrophy or CMD, called LMNA-CMD. As with all types of Muscular Dystrophy, Stanley’s condition is a life limiting, progressive muscle wasting disease caused by a flaw in his genetic code, and there is currently no cure.

Stanley's Heroes 1To combat the condition Stanley requires daily physiotherapy, has a Bluetooth device inserted in his chest to monitor his heart, and gets most of his nutrition through a feeding tube. With regular medical appointments to attend at both Addenbrooke’s and Great Ormond Street hospitals, Stanley is in desperate need of an adjustable car seat, to help provide adequate support and minimise fatigue and discomfort on the long journeys.

Costing over £3000 pounds, the car seat is out of reach for Rob and Laura, Stanley’s parents, who are dedicated to helping raise awareness of Stanley’s condition and to helping raise funds towards critical medical research into Muscular Dystrophy.

To help support the family, Dura Composites is holding a series of summer BBQ events at their Telford Road HQ to help raise money towards a car seat for Stanley, and to help promote the valuable work of the charity Muscular Dystrophy UK.

Stanley's Heroes 2

Stanley Newman and Family

Although Stanley’s particular strain of the disease is rare, around 70,000 people in the UK have a muscle-wasting condition, and the severity varies greatly between types of the condition and between individuals.

As well as the summer BBQ events, Dura Composites are also planning to hold a community raffle and are asking asking local businesses to join them in getting involved by donating raffle prizes.

Speaking about the Dura Composites fundraising, Stanley’s dad Rob Newman, a local firefighter in Clacton said; “”We are touched that Dura Composites chose to reach out & offer Stanley their help, they are a big business with a big heart””.

Stuart Burns, Director at Dura Composites added: “As a family run business which has been based in Clacton for over 20 years, it’s always been important to us to have a positive impact on the local community. We employ over 55 dedicated staff who are passionate about making a real difference to our customers and we are keen to harness this momentum to help make positive changes for Stanley and those affected by Muscular Dystrophy across the UK.”
